The Lawyers\u2019 Society has strongly criticized the conviction and sentencing of Zainab Sheriff, describing the four-year, two-month prison term as \u201cunjustifiably excessive\u201d and a violation of fundamental human rights.<\/p>\n
In a press release, the Society expressed deep concern over the ruling delivered by Magistrate Brima Jah in the case involving the Inspector General of Police. The legal body argued that Sheriff\u2019s comments, made in the exercise of her right to freedom of expression, should not have resulted in criminal prosecution.<\/p>\n
The Society highlighted that the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) had already imposed a fine over the matter\u2014one that was paid by the opposition party\u2014raising questions about the necessity and legality of further judicial action.<\/p>\n
It also took issue with the court\u2019s refusal to grant bail throughout the summary trial, noting that this decision contradicts both the presumption of innocence and provisions in the new Criminal Procedure Act of 2024.<\/p>\n
According to the Lawyers\u2019 Society, the severity of the sentence risks undermining democratic principles by discouraging citizens from expressing dissenting or unpopular opinions. The group warned that such actions could signal shrinking tolerance for open dialogue and free speech in Sierra Leone.<\/p>\n
In light of these concerns, the Society has urged the Chief Justice to exercise his summary review powers under existing laws to revisit the case, acquit, and discharge Sheriff\u2014pointing to precedent in similar cases involving unfair sentencing.<\/p>\n
