Freetown, Saturday 10th January 2025* – Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL), in partnership with UNFPA Sierra Leone, is to host a high-powered delegation of technical experts from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) New York, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and United States Census Bureau who will be on an assessment and support mission for the 2025 Sierra Leone Population and Housing Census (SLPHC 2025).

The assessment and support mission, which starts on Monday, January 13th, and ends on Friday, January 17th, 2025, will serve as a critical step in a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure Sierra Leone consolidates its existing digital census infrastructure, following His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s proclamation on September 9th, 2024.

The major focus of the seven-man delegation from UNFPA, UNECA, and the U. S. Census Bureau is to thoroughly review key census components, including logistics, technological infrastructure, legal frameworks, human resources, and stakeholder engagement. In the end, the assessment will help identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas requiring improvement and support to ensure the 2025 PHC aligns with international best practices for digital data collection.

The 2025 Digital Census marks a significant milestone for the country, building upon the experience gained from the 2021 Digital Mid-Term  Census. Transitioning to a fully digital process, Sierra Leone aims to modernize its data collection method, improve data accuracy, and timelines, enhance accessibility to census results, and strengthen the national statistical system to enable more effective national development planning and evidence-based policymaking.
