In Engagement With Chief Justice Kamanda… SLAJ Commends Live Broadcast Of Constitutional Matter
Chief Justice’s Chambers, Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown, 5th October 2026:
The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has commended the Judiciary, under the leadership of the Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda, for approving the live broadcast of the Supreme Court’s constitutional hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 7th October 2026.
The approval follows a request by SLAJ for the proceedings to be broadcast live, given the national significance of the constitutional matters before the Court. SLAJ described the decision as an important step towards widening public access to proceedings of significant constitutional importance.
The Association also recognised the Judiciary’s appreciation of the important role journalists play in informing the public and promoting transparency and accountability. The approval will allow accredited media houses to cover the proceedings from inside the courtroom, while members of the public and other journalists will be able to follow the hearing through major television stations.
The Independent Radio Network (IRN) has also been authorised to broadcast the proceedings through its network of more than 40 radio stations across the country.
The Chief Justice’s decision reflects his commitment to transparency, accountable leadership and greater public access to justice, while ensuring that the dignity, decorum and integrity of the Court are preserved. The Judiciary has accordingly placed conditions on the coverage, including a prohibition on commentary or analysis on the merits of the matter while it remains sub judice.
SLAJ has pledged to work closely with the Judiciary’s Communications and Public Affairs Unit and the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association to ensure that the live coverage is conducted professionally and in accordance with the conditions set by the Judiciary leadership.
