One of the most rare and powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquakes ever struck in Morocco’s high Atlas Mountains, 71km (44 mìles) southwest of Marrakech, at a depth of 18.5km, including the coastal towns of Imsouane, 180km (102 miles) west of Ighil, and Essaouira, 200km (124 miles) west of Marrakech.
The tremors were also reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, some 350km(220 miles) away, as well as Casablanca.
Over 2000 people have been reported dead in Marrakech, injured thousands, and damaged several historic buildings and homes while leaving thousands homeless.
Marrakech is Morocco’s fourth-largest city of a population of about 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination.
However, the Moroccan government has declared three days of national mourning and stated this level of seismic activity is the first recorded in a century in the country.
