ELECTRICITY THEFT Bottom strap Chief Minister Accuses Religious Houses
By: Christian Conteh
Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has ignited a firestorm of controversy by accusing religious institutions, including Churches and Mosques, alongside government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), and private consumers of rampant electricity theft.
This allegation comes hot on the heels of a spate of blackouts across the nation, triggering the resignation of Alhaji Kanja Sesay, the erstwhile Minister of Energy, and the wholesale dismissal of all board members of EDSA and EGTC, the country’s energy generation and distribution entities.
Despite the gravity of the accusation, Chief Minister Sengeh has yet to furnish concrete evidence to substantiate his claims, leaving the nation bewildered and reeling from the implications of his statement.
The accusations were made during the government’s routine weekly press briefing, held within the confines of the Information Ministry’s conference room in Freetown. A video recording capturing the segment of the press briefing has since surfaced, catapulting the controversy into the limelight and stoking public outrage.
Media outlets nationwide and social media have been ablaze with coverage, disseminating direct quotes from Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, further fueling the fervour surrounding this explosive accusation.
The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone has not responded to the accusations. Sources within the organization say they are carefully studying the statement and will speak up if they have to.
