Religious Leaders Outraged at Electricity Theft Accusations
By: Christian Conteh
Religious leaders in Sierra Leone have expressed outrage following Chief Minister David Sengeh’s recent allegations of electricity theft against religious institutions. The remarks, made in a widely circulated audio and video clip, have drawn sharp criticism from leaders of both Christianity and Islam, who urge caution and respect when discussing matters involving sacred places of worship.
Ambassador Rev Dr. Momodu Conteh, Chairman of the Mission for Souls Network of Pastors International, cautioned the Chief Minister against making baseless accusations. Rev. Conteh reminded Sengeh that the church holds immense power and significance, warning against underestimating its influence. Citing historical examples, he emphasized the consequences of disrespecting religious entities and urged Sengeh to tread carefully.
Echoing similar sentiments, a viral TikTok video featured a Muslim cleric expressing dismay at the accusations, suggesting that such allegations indicate a lack of reverence for Allah. The cleric warned of divine retribution for those who provoke religious anger.
Furthermore, the Civil Society group, CHRISTIAN LAWYERS CENTRE, operating under the alias Legal Link, penned an open letter condemning the Chief Minister’s statements. Rashid Dumbuya Esq., the organization’s Executive Director, emphasized the dangers of baseless accusations against religious institutions.
Legal Link stressed the importance of substantiated claims, highlighting the potential damage to the reputation and integrity of religious organizations. The group emphasized the vital role of churches and mosques as pillars of spiritual guidance and community support, cautioning against actions that undermine their honorable missions.
The open letter underscored the breach of ethical conduct and the principles of natural justice inherent in Sengeh’s accusations. Legal Link emphasized the need for responsible leadership guided by accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights.
Legal Link went on to call for an urgent retraction and public apology from the Chief Minister, urging a shift towards collaborative solutions to address energy insecurities rather than casting unfounded aspersions.
