Man Granted Le200, 000 Bail for Fraud

Forty-seven years old Emmanuel George made another appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Pademba Road Court No.2 in Freetown.

George faced four count charges of Conspiracy contrary to law, obtaining money by false pretences, fraudulent conversion and unlawful possession.

According to the particulars of offence on the 9th August, 2024,at Hill Station, in Freetown did conspire together  with other persons unknown to commit a crime to wit Obtaining money by false pretences.

Count two further stated that on the same date and place, the accused person with intent to defraud obtained the sum of eight thousand five hundred United States dollars ($8,500) from Mohamed Kamara by falsely pretending that he would facilitate his travel to the United States of America knowing same to be false.

Count three on the same date and place, the accused person to his own use or benefit fraudulently converted certain property that is to say nine Sierra Leone Passport Books each value two thousand four hundred Leones all to the total value of twenty one thousand six hundred Leones (21,600) entrusted to him by Mohamed Kamara for the purpose of delivering the said property to one David Sengeh.

Count four further stated that on the same date and place, the accused person reasonable suspected to have unlawfully obtained twenty one Sierra Leone Passport books.

When the charges were read and explained to the accused person, no plea taken.

The prosecutor Deputy Superintendent of police Sorie Conteh informed the Bench that his witness is present, but he didn’t have proper conference with him. Thus, he sought for a short adjournment date.

Counsel representing the accused person A.M.Y Kemokai Esq applied for bail for and on behalf of the accused person that he is a Sierra Leonean resident within this jurisdiction that he has reliable sureties who are willing and ready to go into recognisance on his behalf he will not interfere with prosecution witness or witnesses nor will he jumped bail. He made his application pursuant to section 79 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act No.32 of 1965.

Meanwhile, Magistrate Bangura granted the accused person bail in the sum of two hundred thousand Leones with two sureties in like sum sureties must be responsible citizens must produce valid identity card depicting his or her address in Freetown the sureties must operate account having at least 50% of the total sum contained in the charged sheet bail to be approved by the Deputy assistant Registrar.

The matter was adjourned to the 30th October, 2024.
