Modernizing Operations… Govt Provides Digital Skills Training To Security Sector
The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), in partnership with the Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation (MoCTI) and KNS College, has announced a new digital skills training initiative targeting Sierra Leone’s security sector. The programme will benefit personnel from the Office of National Security (ONS), Sierra Leone Police (SLP), and the Ministry of Defence / Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).
The initiative, set to commence in October 2025 to coincide with Cybersecurity Awareness Month, will provide specialized training in cybersecurity, digital literacy, emerging technologies, and other critical areas. Over 500 security officers are expected to participate in the first phase, gaining practical skills to identify, prevent, and respond to both traditional and emerging security threats.
“This programme strengthens the security sector’s ability to keep pace with rapid technological change,” said DSTI officials. “It equips frontline personnel with the tools needed to safeguard national data and respond to evolving threats effectively.”
The training aligns with the Government of Sierra Leone’s digital transformation agenda, supporting priorities under the Big Five Game Changers and the National Digital Transformation Strategy (NDTS). By integrating digital innovation into national security operations, the initiative reinforces the country’s commitment to modern, resilient security services.
Course materials will be hosted on a dedicated digital platform, allowing officers to revisit lessons, share knowledge, and train others beyond the initial sessions. Continuous access to the platform will support ongoing professional development and cultivate a culture of lifelong learning within the security services.
The DSTI-led partnership underscores a coordinated effort between government agencies to modernize the security sector and enhance Sierra Leone’s capacity to prevent cybercrime, respond to emerging threats, and strengthen national protection through digital expertise.
