The political controversy surrounding Hon. Alhaji Musa Tarawally has opened a fresh debate within the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), with questions emerging over his relationship with the party, internal party procedures and the application of the party’s constitution.

Tarawally is a veteran figure in Sierra Leonean politics and has a long association with the SLPP and its political structures. His involvement in the party dates back several decades, and over the years, he has occupied influential positions within its political hierarchy.

He has previously been associated with the party’s youth leadership, served as a former deputy chairman, represented constituents as a Member of Parliament, and later played a role in strategic planning within the party.

His long history with the SLPP has therefore made the latest controversy more significant, particularly as questions are now being raised publicly about his current political status and relationship with the party.

A central question emerging from the debate is why the issue surrounding Tarawally has resurfaced at this particular time.

Records discussed in relation to the controversy indicate that Tarawally resigned from the CDP on 15 June 2018. That resignation has reportedly been confirmed through media records.

However, questions have subsequently emerged regarding his activities after that resignation and his participation in SLPP affairs.

One of the issues being discussed is Tarawally’s reported participation in a national delegates’ conference, where he was allegedly present and participated in voting. His participation has raised questions about how the SLPP regarded his membership and political standing at the time.

The matter has now developed into a wider discussion about constitutionalism and internal democracy within the governing party.

Political parties are governed by constitutions and internal regulations that establish procedures for membership, leadership, disciplinary action and dispute resolution. Where questions arise over the status of a prominent member, those procedures become particularly important.

The controversy has been further complicated by competing statements and documents reportedly circulating from different sections of the party. The existence of conflicting positions has made it difficult for members of the public to determine which position represents the official and authoritative position of the SLPP.

The public nature of the disagreement has also raised questions about whether internal party matters are being resolved through established structures or increasingly through public statements and counter-statements.

Another issue being raised concerns documentation reportedly identifying Tarawally as a Grand Chief Patron of the party. If the document is authentic and remains valid, it could provide important context to his relationship with the SLPP.

However, the existence of such documentation would still need to be considered alongside the party’s constitution and any subsequent decisions taken by the appropriate party organs.

The controversy therefore goes beyond Tarawally as an individual. It has opened a broader discussion about how the SLPP manages internal disagreements and interprets its own constitutional provisions.

Tarawally’s reported participation in party activities after his resignation from the CDP in 2018 is particularly relevant, because it raises questions about whether his political status was recognized by the SLPP at the time.

If he was permitted to participate in party activities and vote at a national delegates’ conference, questions may reasonably arise over the basis upon which his status is now being challenged or reconsidered.

Conversely, if his participation was not formally recognized under the party’s constitution, the SLPP may need to explain how and why he was allowed to participate.

These unresolved questions have contributed to the growing public interest in the matter.

The controversy also comes against the wider backdrop of debates about internal democracy within political parties. Parties are expected to maintain clear institutional procedures for handling disagreements, particularly when disputes involve senior or historically influential members.

For the SLPP, the current situation provides an opportunity to clarify the matter through its established organs and constitutional provisions.

A clear explanation of Tarawally’s current status, the relevant constitutional provisions and the process through which any decision was reached, could help reduce the uncertainty created by competing claims.

The issue is also significant, because internal disputes involving senior party figures can have consequences beyond the individuals directly involved. They can affect perceptions of party cohesion, institutional credibility and confidence in internal decision-making processes.

For Hon. Alhaji Musa Tarawally, the controversy has brought renewed attention to his long political relationship with the SLPP. For the party, however, the matter presents a broader institutional challenge concerning constitutional interpretation and the management of internal political disagreements.

At the centre of the debate is therefore not only Tarawally’s political status, but whether the SLPP can resolve the dispute through transparent, constitutional and established internal mechanisms.

Until the relevant party authorities provide a definitive clarification, competing interpretations of Tarawally’s position are likely to continue generating public debate.

The unfolding controversy has consequently placed both Musa Tarawally’s relationship with the SLPP and the party’s internal constitutional processes under renewed public scrutiny.
