Stylish & Roxanne Hargreaves Support Ray Of Hope International Academy
LUNGI, SIERRA LEONE—
Ray of Hope International Academy (RHIA) has received a significant boost to its educational development following a coordinated triple donation by Board Members, Abdul Karim Kamara, popularly known as Stylish of White House fame, and Roxanne Hargreaves, in a move that underscores the growing importance of partnerships in advancing quality education, youth empowerment and institutional development in Sierra Leone.
The donations, which target sports development, facilities management and technology-driven learning, represent a practical investment in the Academy’s ambition to provide a well-rounded educational experience that prepares pupils not only for academic success, but also for the practical challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
Through their respective initiatives and collaborative efforts, the two board members have facilitated the provision of eight sports bikes through Village Bicycle Project, a chlorine and bleach-making machine through partner Water Step, and 10 desktop computers through Reseed Sierra Leone’s Youth Up-Skilling Programme. Together, these contributions address three important aspects of school life: physical development, a clean and hygienic learning environment, and access to digital technology.

The initiative follows the successful RHIA Bike Race held on October 11, which brought together pupils and members of the school community in a celebration of sports, participation and school spirit. The latest contribution builds on that momentum, demonstrating how community engagement and targeted investments can help schools expand opportunities for young people.
Through his NGO, Village Bicycle Project, Stylish facilitated the donation of eight sports bikes, with two allocated to each of RHIA’s four school houses. The donation is expected to strengthen the Academy’s inter-house sporting activities, while encouraging pupils to embrace physical fitness, teamwork, discipline and healthy competition.
Sports remain an important component of holistic education, offering young people opportunities to develop confidence, perseverance, leadership and respect for rules. Beyond the physical benefits, participation in organised sporting activities can help pupils learn how to cooperate with others, manage competition and respond constructively to both success and disappointment.
For RHIA, the availability of the bikes creates opportunities to broaden its extracurricular programme, encourage greater participation in cycling and strengthen the sporting identity of the school houses. The bikes can also support future cycling activities and friendly competitions, building on the success of the October 11 event.
By encouraging pupils to balance academic responsibilities with physical activity, the school can reinforce the understanding that education extends beyond the classroom. With appropriate supervision, regular maintenance and safe riding practices, the bikes can become a valuable resource for promoting physical wellbeing and strengthening relationships among pupils.
The second component of the donation package addresses the equally important issue of school sanitation and facilities management. Through partner Water Step, RHIA will have access to a chlorine and bleach-making machine intended to support the facilities management team in cleaning and maintaining the Academy’s water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, including its toilets.
A clean and hygienic school environment is fundamental to effective teaching and learning. Poor sanitation can expose pupils and staff to avoidable health risks, disrupt school activities and undermine the quality of the educational experience. By strengthening the school’s capacity to prepare cleaning and sanitation products, the machine is expected to support more consistent hygiene practices and improve the management of essential facilities.
The benefits of such an intervention extend beyond the immediate task of cleaning. Well-maintained toilets and appropriate sanitation arrangements contribute to pupil dignity, comfort and wellbeing, helping create an environment in which learners can concentrate on their studies. Good hygiene practices can also reinforce pupils’ understanding of personal responsibility, environmental cleanliness and public health.
For the school’s management, the equipment provides an additional resource for organising routine sanitation activities and maintaining standards across the campus. Its effective use will require appropriate staff training, protective equipment, safe chemical handling, suitable storage and adherence to relevant health and safety procedures. With these measures in place, the machine can make a meaningful contribution to RHIA’s efforts to maintain a cleaner and safer learning environment.
The third donation focuses on digital education, an area of increasing importance, as technology continues to transform learning, employment and national development. Through their collaboration and NGO Reseed Sierra Leone, Stylish and Roxanne Hargreaves have launched a Youth Up-Skilling Programme that has delivered 10 desktop computers to RHIA’s Robotics Lab, with the computers expected to support learning activities immediately.
The donation is intended to strengthen computer literacy, coding, robotics and other technology-based educational activities, providing pupils with greater access to practical learning tools. At a time when digital competence is increasingly important across numerous professions, access to computers can help young people acquire foundational skills that prepare them for further education, employment and entrepreneurship.
The computers will provide opportunities for pupils to move beyond theoretical instruction and engage more directly with technology. With appropriate teaching and curriculum integration, they can support lessons in basic computer operations, digital research, word processing, programming and introductory robotics. They can also encourage pupils to explore logical reasoning, computational thinking, creativity and problem-solving.
These skills are relevant not only to careers in information technology and engineering, but also to science, business, environmental management and many other fields. Early exposure to digital tools can help pupils identify their interests, build confidence and develop the capacity to adapt to an increasingly technology-driven society.
The donation is particularly significant because it strengthens the practical dimension of RHIA’s educational programme. By using the Robotics Lab for structured lessons and collaborative projects, pupils can learn to work together, test ideas, solve problems and develop innovative approaches to everyday challenges. The computers can therefore serve as more than instructional equipment; they can become instruments for developing curiosity, independent thinking and practical competence.
The long-term impact of the technology investment will depend on effective integration into classroom learning, regular equipment maintenance, reliable electricity, appropriate security and continued teacher development. These measures will help ensure that the computers remain functional and accessible to pupils while supporting meaningful learning outcomes.
Explaining his commitment to supporting the Academy, Stylish emphasised the importance of investing in young people, stating, “Youth Development in this Country is critical for a brighter future.”
The statement captures the broader significance of the initiative, which goes beyond the provision of physical resources to reflect a commitment to expanding opportunities for young people. By supporting sports, sanitation and digital learning, the board members and their partner organisations are contributing to different but complementary aspects of pupil development.
The collaboration between Stylish and Roxanne Hargreaves also highlights the role of school board members and development-focused organisations in helping educational institutions respond to practical needs. Partnerships involving NGOs, community organisations and schools can provide important support for programmes that might otherwise face resource constraints, particularly when contributions are aligned with clearly identified priorities.
For RHIA, the three donations create opportunities to strengthen existing programmes while expanding the range of experiences available to pupils. The bikes can encourage fitness and teamwork, the sanitation equipment can support improved hygiene practices, and the computers can provide access to practical digital learning. Together, these interventions reinforce the relationship between academic achievement, physical wellbeing, a supportive school environment and the acquisition of practical skills.
The contributions also reflect a broader understanding of quality education as a process that extends beyond examination results. While academic knowledge remains central, pupils must also develop communication, collaboration, discipline, adaptability and the confidence to apply what they learn. Sports, sanitation education and technology-based activities can all contribute to these wider educational objectives when supported by effective school management and appropriate teaching.
As Ray of Hope International Academy continues to pursue its motto, “Pursue to Surpass,” the triple donation marks another contribution to its efforts to provide pupils with a meaningful and well-rounded educational experience. The Academy’s continued progress will depend not only on the availability of resources but also on the commitment of its leadership, teachers, board members, parents and partners to ensure that those resources are used effectively and sustainably.
The donations facilitated by Stylish and Roxanne Hargreaves demonstrate how targeted support can translate into practical opportunities for young people. By strengthening sporting activities, supporting facilities management and expanding access to technology, the initiative contributes to an educational environment in which pupils can develop their abilities, explore new interests and prepare for the demands of the future.
Ultimately, the significance of the triple donation lies not simply in the equipment delivered, but in the possibilities it creates for learning, personal development and youth empowerment. Through continued collaboration and investment, RHIA aims to nurture a generation of learners who are academically prepared, physically active, technologically capable and equipped to contribute positively to Sierra Leone’s development.
