NASSIT Explores Sewa Ground Market:
A Glimpse into Future Trade Hub
The National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) embarked on an insightful visit to the bustling Sewa Ground Market facility on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.
Mr. Abel Onomake, the Project Manager of Sewa Ground Market, took centre stage during the press tour, expressing his enthusiasm for this momentous occasion that showcased the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering trade development within the country. He emphasized NASSIT’s meticulous approach to addressing various project aspects, ensuring the ultimate satisfaction of the traders who will soon occupy this impressive edifice.
He acknowledged concerns raised about security and other pertinent issues, affirming that these concerns were meticulously addressed in the design of the new facility.
Divulging intricate details, Mr. Onomake shed light on the project’s inception. Initially consisting of seven units in different stages of construction, the facility was reorganized into distinct lots to facilitate systematic completion. Out of these, two state-of-the-art buildings were newly constructed, while the third was inherited.
The focal point, Lot One, a sprawling open market occupying 70% of the facility, centres on Sani Abacha Street traders. Mr. Onomake empathized with the challenges faced by female traders at Sani Abacha Street, revealing that the new facility was meticulously designed to provide ample space and essential amenities such as banking services, a clinic, and a children’s playground. Relocation to Sewa Grounds aims to ensure a seamless trading experience for road users, customers, and wholesalers with business interests in the vicinity of Sani Abacha Street. Anticipating the contractors’ commitment, Mr. Onomake expressed optimism that the facility would be ready for use next month.
Highlighting the facility’s impressive features, the Project Manager outlined over 1000 market stalls and 76 warehouses tailored to the needs of importers and businesses, streamlining the process of storing and selling goods. With more than 200 shops, a distinct effort has been made to enhance their appearance for the comfort of both traders and customers. Mr. Onomake ensured effective management and organization of the facility.
In terms of amenities, the facility boasts four types of stores and gender-segregated restrooms, catering to traders who no longer need to transport their wares daily. Notably, 76 storage units alleviate the burden of warehousing concerns. Unlike the Sani Abacha Street vicinity, the Sewa Grounds Market provides toilet facilities, water, electricity, and standby generators. To prioritize safety, a police post and fire brigade detachment have been established. A dedicated cleaning team maintains the premises, while nursing mothers can conduct their business with peace of mind, leaving their children at a well-equipped playground.
Ginnah Alie Koroma, National Chairlady for Market Women, expressed her elation regarding the Sewa Ground Market’s construction. She passionately shared her contribution to the endeavour, which included providing meals for the workers to expedite the project’s progress.
The NASSIT’s visit provided a glimpse into the future trade hub that Sewa Ground Market aspires to become. With careful planning and a robust array of amenities, this project marks a significant step towards enhancing trade and providing an upgraded trading experience for all stakeholders involved.
