Despite APC’s 48-Hour Ultimatum… Parliament Approves Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner
Sierra Leone’s Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), solidifying his leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Alpha, who had been serving in an acting capacity, now assumes full constitutional authority to steer the country’s electoral management body through what many observers describe as a critical reform period.
The approval followed consultations with political parties, with 12 out of 14 registered parties backing the nomination. However, the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) boycotted the process. The party’s 48-hour ultimatum demanding that the government withdraw the nomination and finalize pending constitutional amendments expired without resolution.
Sources indicate that senior APC figures have since engaged in high-level discussions with representatives of the United States Embassy in Sierra Leone, the European Union Ambassador, the British High Commission in Sierra Leone, and the ECOWAS Commission Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security. The consultations are understood to center on the appointment and broader electoral reform concerns.
Alpha’s confirmation signals continuity within the ECSL’s leadership structure, but it also underscores persistent political tensions as the country moves toward the next electoral cycle. With preparations for 2028 now squarely under his watch, the spotlight will remain firmly on the Commission’s ability to foster transparency, inclusivity, and public trust in the electoral process.
