Sierra Leone & UK Record Significant Trade Growth
John Kelly Marah
Trade between Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom is on the rise, presenting fresh opportunities for Sierra Leone’s economy. According to the latest figures from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, bilateral trade reached £103 million in the year ending September 2025, a 15.7% increase from the previous year.
Sierra Leone exported £25 million worth of goods to the UK, while imports from the UK totaled £78 million, reflecting growth on both sides of the trading corridor. The upward trend highlights the potential for Sierra Leone to expand its export base and increase foreign exchange earnings, create jobs, and strengthen local industries.
Government officials and analysts say diversifying export products and improving production capacity are key to maximizing the country’s gains. Investment support from UK-linked development institutions, such as British International Investment, has also played a critical role in boosting private sector growth. Programs offering risk-sharing facilities and credit access are helping small and medium enterprises scale operations and meet international standards.
Such partnerships also encourage skills transfer, technology adoption, and competitiveness in global markets. Experts recommend policies that promote value addition, streamline export logistics, and develop market-ready products, allowing Sierra Leone to turn trade opportunities into sustainable economic growth.
With bilateral trade on the rise, Sierra Leone has a clear opportunity to leverage these gains. The challenge now is ensuring that the momentum translates into tangible benefits for citizens, businesses, and the wider economy.
