Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is not just sadness. It is a real medical condition that affects mood, thinking, behavior, sleep, appetite, and energy levels. With proper care, depression is treatable.

What is Depression?

Depression happens when brain chemicals (like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) become imbalanced and stress systems stay over-activated. This leads to persistent emotional and physical symptoms lasting at least 2 weeks or more.

Common Signs & Symptoms

People may experience a combination of emotional, physical, and thinking changes:

  • Persistent low mood or feeling empty most of the day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed (music, sports, hobbies)
  • Fatigue or low energy even after rest
  • Sleep problems (insomnia or sleeping too much)
  • Appetite changes (eating too little or too much)
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
  • Psychomotor slowing (moving or speaking more slowly)
  • Social withdrawal
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Not everyone has all symptoms.
