Former APC Flag bearer Aspirant Joins SLPP
Former presidential flag bearer under the All Peoples Congress (APC) Party, Susan Bona, has officially declared for the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) over the weekend in New Jersey in the United States of America during the Julius Maada Bio (JMB) fund raising occasion where she was given a Certificate of recognition.
The certificate was presented to Susan Bona by the first lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone Dr. Fatima Jabbie Bio.
In her statement, Fatima Bio described Susan Bona as a good and patriotic citizen that supports the government in its developmental strides, whilst formally welcoming her to the SLPP Party.
Susan Bona who is in record as the first female candidate to declare for the highly male contested flag bearer race of the main opposition APC party along with Dr. Samura Kamara, Dr. Richard Conteh, Dr. Kaifala Marrah among others.
Madam Bona revealed that since joining the APC party in 2011, she has been deeply committed to the vision of a Sierra Leone where equality prevails, inspired by initiatives such as the 30% quota for women and former President Ernest Koroma’s vision of rebranding the APC, adding that her involvement has always been driven by a desire to contribute positively to the development of Sierra Leone.
Giving the reasons for her declaration, she said, the increasing toxicity within the APC party’s politics, characterized by violence, tribalism, and regional discrimination, particularly against the Mende and Kono tribes, was one of the many reasons for her opting out of her party.
Madam Bona also underscored that the lack of action from the APC party leadership in addressing some of the critical issues plaguing her former party and its current path of diverting from the principles it once stood for was also another reason for choosing the ruling SLPP party.
The former presidential hopeful added that her decision to declare for the SLPP came after several reflections on her former party’s current state and its deviation from the principles of respect and unity that should define their course.
During her declaration to join the ruling SLPP party, she presented a cheque of five thousand United States dollars to the SLPP North America membership as her contribution to the development of her new party.
